A visionary masterplan has been developed for the historic Berwick Estate on the edge of Shrewsbury, rooted in the principles of landscape-led, community-focused design. The proposals sensitively integrate much-needed new housing within the Estate’s unique heritage context, celebrating the 18th-century parkland and embracing the ethos of 21st-century Garden Villages. This new community is framed around a ‘green lung’—a central spine of open space connecting the historic park to Shrewsbury Town Centre via a proposed pedestrian footbridge over the River Severn.
The masterplan reinforces Shrewsbury’s growth strategy through its alignment with the proposed North West Relief Road and improved sustainable transport connections, offering walkable neighbourhoods, access to nature, and a renewed relationship between town and countryside. Guided by the Berwick Estate’s long-term stewardship, the proposals balance high-quality, affordable homes with enhanced public access, biodiversity gains, and enduring respect for the Estate’s rich architectural and ecological legacy.
